7. ALL-RED DISPLAYS
There are two methods of achieving an all-red display:
- All-red stage
- Red extension during intergreen.
An All-Red Stage is a stage during which all signal phases display their red signal
aspects.
The red condition between conflicting phases in certain stage to stage transitions can
be extended up to a pre-determined maximum. One red extension value and one
maximum red value is provided for all stage to stage transitions.
The programmed value may be changed via the handset using the commands in
brackets.
The range of timings are:
Red extension (REX) - 0 to 31.8 seconds in 0.2 second steps
Maximum red (RMX) - 0 to 255 seconds in 1 second steps
(See also section 2.6.6).
If alternative extension or maximum red periods are required for different red periods
this can be achieved by the use of separate All-Red stages. Care should be taken to
ensure that any all-red extensions in this case operate as required during different
modes.
7.1 ALL-RED STAGE
The All-Red Stage can be called automatically and used to provide a ‘buffer stage’
between conflicting phases, e.g. as shuttle working on bridges or on moves from an
indicative green arrow turning movement back to the main movement. In the
intersection in section 21 the move 2-1 goes via stage 0.
Note: if Stage 0 is used for changes to stages other than Stage 1, problems can arise as
the controller will decide on stage changes cyclically.
The All-Red Stage can have a minimum period which can be extended by the relevant
detectors up to a maximum period. This is achieved by allocating a dummy phase to
the stage to provide a minimum green, green extension and maximum green. In the
intersection in section 21 phase J is in Stage 0.
Any of the stages available, including Stage 0 can be considered as an All-Red Stage.
During manual operation, All-Red Stages cannot be extended by All-Red detectors,
they will just be displayed for the minimum period.
